Corfu Travel Recommendations

Getting There

Corfu Airport has direct flights from major European hubs like London, Paris, Frankfurt and Rome, plus frequent connections from Athens. Aegean Airlines flights from Athens are excellent but use smaller planes, so book early.

Getting Around

Corfu is large, so we recommend hiring a car (shared between groups) or a scooter to explore fully. If staying in Barbati and keeping things simple, you can get by on foot and use local buses, including wedding transport and buses to Corfu Town.

Car hire is best from the airport. Barbati is a 15 to 20 minute drive away. Taxis are available but can be expensive, ask for the meter. We’ll share taxi numbers closer to the wedding. Uber reportedly now operates on the island.

Around Barbati

Beach restaurants are all good and similar. For better value and lovely views, try Lord Byron or Daphnes on the main road.

Coffee Lovers does great coffee, try a Greek café freddo.

Two minutes north is Igera, a traditional waterfront taverna, perfect for drinks (food is only OK) and safe for kids to swim.

Next door is Oliva, a beautiful spot for a special evening, we haven’t tried it but it looks great.

Agni Bay

Just north of Barbati, Agni Bay has several waterfront tavernas in a small area, Toula is said to be the best. Highly recommend for long lunches or dinners, book ahead! Plenty of parking and possibly water taxis.

The White House

Further norther is the former home of the Durrell family, where Gerald kept his animals and Lawrence wrote My Family and Other Animals. Now a beautiful waterfront restaurant honouring the family’s history.

Old Peritheia

On the north-eastern tip of the Island is Old Peritheia, this is an ancient farm village that now operates as a series of authentic restaurants and is one of the most charming visits in Corfu. Lunch here feels like a step back in time, with crumbling ruins, fig-tree shade, and tables laid with red-and-white checkered cloths. Expect Nona’s cooking traditional Greek dishes like lamb, goat or rabbit. Best visited for lunch by car or scooter. Bring a light layer if it’s cool as it is high altitude.

Paleokastritsa, West Coast

Very different landscape, sometimes even surf. Visit Paleokastritsa and consider a boat to Rovinia or Paradise Bay.

A great destination for morning coffee or afternoon drinks is La Grotta Bar, which is set in the rocks. We wont try and explain this, just make sure you Google the bar so you understand the vibe! The highlight is the cliff jumping here, either as participant or spectator. Parking can be tricky, don’t let that put you off though.

Pelekas

A hilltop village with authentic restaurants and great sunset views, especially from Kaiser’s Throne.

Ambelonas Winery

Would have been a lovely option as a wedding venue but could only cater for smaller numbers. Has a great reputation for food and their wine tasting, they also do a cooking school.

Corfu Town

Best explored by following your nose…

  • Imbari for breakfast by the sea

  • Cavalieri rooftop bar

  • Salto wine bar

  • Mikro for coffee or cocktails

  • Central Market

  • The Promenade Park and The Liston are a must!

Paxos

One of Greece’s most charming islands, accessible only by boat from Corfu. Perfect for a two night stay before or after the wedding.

The Dolphin fast catamaran runs frequently from Corfu Port near the Old Town and takes under an hour.

Athens

Athens has had a major revival over the last decade and is now a very vibrant city. Best enjoyed late afternoon and evening.

  • Walk up Mt Lycabettus for sunset views over Athens

  • Explore Exarchia, stop at This Is Not Athens bar

  • Visit Argentine Square for dinner

  • Rooftop bars with Acropolis views, CityZen is our favourite

  • Wander Plaka and Monastiraki, visit Little Kook if with kids (or if you’re a big kid)

  • Of course see the Acropolis and museum, museum is ideal during the hottest part of the day

  • Check for performances at the Acropolis theatre
